Ground Beef Recall: Super Bowl Party Recipes, Suggestions Avoiding the Poisonous Meat

Jan 29, 2013 10:50 AM EST

There was a ground beef recall in the midwestern part of the United States after over a dozen people fell ill from the consumption of the meat. Five people were sick after eating raw ground beef at a restaurant after health officials said they were poisoned by Salmonella.

Be careful to all those living in Michigan, the restaurant's ground beef is believed to come from Jouni-Meats Inc. and Gab Halal Foods Inc. located in Sterling Heights and Troy, to be specific.

Last week Jouni Meats recalled approximately 500 pounds of ground beef and Gab Halal Foods recalled about 550 pounds of ground beef, the U.S. Center of Disease Control said.

Other states reporting sicknesses from the consumption of the meat include Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin.

So for all of those in the midwest, the Super Bowl is coming up. Halal foods are delicious, but let's try sticking to more traditional foods for the big game to be played on Sunday.

We already posted a story about chicken wings on Monday. Here are other suggestions that will allow you to avoid ground beef or at least help you substitute the meat in popular dishes.

Tacos
You buy some tortilla, dice up a couple of tomatoes, lettuce and onions. Make sure to get chicken instead of beef. Cook it up and serve it to your guests with confidence.

Home Made Pizza
Some things are best to keep simple. You don't have to order out or make multiple dishes on already a nerve wracking day for some as they get set to watch their favorite teams play in the Super Bowl.

Avoid the stress and let the oven do the work. Buy yourself some dough, tomato sauce and shredded mozarella cheese. You can add as many condiments as you want and hey, the best part is, if you haven't made your own pizza before, you can have fun learning how to make it on the big day.

Make sure you have munchies on the side in case your guests don't like it. Check out this personal pizza recipe.

Stuff them with Guac and Dips
Some people prefer to keep things simple and they feed their guests munchies. Some people have early dinners and then just kick back a few six packs instead of stuffing themselves with food. Of course, they won't drive since we're becoming more responsible about this.

You buy some tostitos and avocado and feed them guacamole. You can't go wrong. If they don't live guac, there's spinach dip, cheese dip, salsa dip. You name it and there's a special condiment for everybody.

Check out this guacamole recipe that will surely please your guests and their taste buds.
