New York Rangers team captain, Ryan Callahan, injured what appeared to be his left arm in Tuesday night's game against the Philadelphia Flyers. He left the game in the third period and did not return.
Callahan skated off the ice cradling his left arm after getting into a post-whistle fight around the Ranger's net with Flyers' center Maxime Talbot. Both players tossed down their gloves, but Callahan left in pain before ever throwing a punch. Clearly frustrated, Callahan was not satisfied after scoring his second goal of the season on a power-play to put the Rangers up 2-0 in the second period. The goal turned out to be the game winner as the Rangers beat the Flyers 2-1. However, his attempt to spark his team could leave him out for some time.
Callahan missed only six games last season. He finished being ranked third on the team in scoring with 29 goals in 76 games, while also recording 25 assists. The Rangers are off to a lack luster start, going 3-3 to begin the season. They have been relying on the captain to get the team moving again. the Rangers reached the Conference Finals last season. The aggressive right winger is an asset on offense with his ability to score in high-traffic areas around the net, while truly setting the tone on defense with his hard fore-checking and hits.
When pressed for comment, Rangers head coach John Tortorella, gave no time table for Callahan's return after providing little information about the injury after the game. Callahan is expected to be re-evaluated on Wednesday.
