Arsenal Transfer Rumours: Willems or Perreira Could be on their Way to the Emirates After Injury blow to Gibbs

With Kieran Gibbs ruled out for three weeks due to injury, Arsene Wenger will look to pull off a deadline day transfer for a left-back, with PSV defender Jetro Willems and Inter Milan's Alvaro Pereira being considered.

Arsenal were deal a blow when Gibbs had to be taken off late in the first half after straining his hamstring, with replacement Andre Santos again looking shaky at the back, to say the very least.

"It is a thigh strain and that rules him out for the next three weeks," Wenger said of Gibbs. "It's a blow for us.

"I'll see what I can do. Gibbs was a big player for us going forward and in the game we want to play. I cannot promise you any transfers. We work on it. We want an official extension of the window for one week," Wenger added jokingly.

However, jokes apart, Arsenal need a left-back, because the prospect of Santos playing in that position for the next three weeks will send a shiver down every Arsenal fans' mind and a smile on every other team's face.

Santos is an accident waiting to happen every time he is asked to defend and was culpable in conceding Arsenal's second goal against Liverpool, while almost gifting Luis Suarez a winner late on.

Wenger does have the option of using Thomas Vermaelen as a left-back with Laurent Koscielny slotting in at center-back. However, the prudent move would be to bring in a proven fullback.

Willems has been linked with a move to Arsenal for quite a while now, and the 18-year-old will provide a good option in the absence of Gibbs.

However, the chances of PSV letting go of their player late on in the transfer window without the option of buying a replacement is very slim, unless of course they receive an offer they can't refuse; which in turn, Arsenal are unlikely to make.

A late move for Inter defender Pereira is another option, with the left-back, who made a summer move from Porto, also interesting Tottenham.

One thing is certain, Arsenal need cover in that position, and even giving youngster Jernade Meade a run out rather than taking a risk with Santos will be the better option.

Wenger has made some interesting deadline day moves off late, and if the Frenchman can add a left-back to go with a striker and defensive midfielder, Arsenal fans will be in dreamland. However, right now, they might just settle for one signing, at the very least.
