Federal customs officials found millions of dollars in fake Super Bowl jerseys in Cincinnati on Tuesday, seizing multiple shipments over the past week.
According to the Associated Press, federal officials found bogus Super Bowl jerseys are among $3.4 million in counterfeit goods and shipping packages that were seized at two different Ohio airports.
The report says that U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said Tuesday the jerseys and other items were seized over the past nine days at the DHL station at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and the UPS hub at Louisville International Airport.
A spokeswoman for customs said that most of the items were the jerseys but that there also were other types of clothing, products and electronics. The AP reports that "about 22,600 items with an estimated manufacturer's suggested retail price of $2.9 million at the DHL hub and about 37,900 items valued at about $510,000 were confiscated at the UPS hub." The figures are based on what the goods would have cost on the actual market.
The seizure comes days after the Baltimore Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 to take home the Super Bowl championship. After the Super Bowl, the shirts that are made for the other team are usually given to charity, but this case was different than just those types of jerseys.
