Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard finally signed on the dotted line, but not quite on a contract that every single Blues fan would have been expecting.

Lampard, the Blues legend, is now set to make his debut as an author after signing a book publishing deal with Little Brown to write a series of children's books.

The 34-year-old, whose future is yet to be decided with his current deal to play the game he loves expiring at the end of the season, will write a series of books called Frankie's Magic Football.

The book will be about the adventures of little Frankie, with several of the other characters loosely based on his teammates, according to the Chelsea veteran himself.

"I first had the idea of Frankie and his Magic Football when reading stories to my own children," Lampard said. "Sport and reading are two essentials for us at home, so I decided to make up my own football stories and adventures.

"The characters are loosely based on friends and teammates I've played with over the years. I am delighted that Little Brown liked the stories as much as my children and will be publishing the Frankie's Magic Football series."

The first book is set to be released in June, with a couple more to follow in the year.

Lampard will not be the first soccer player to turn himself into an author, with Arsenal forward Theo Walcott already publishing several rather successful children's books, while former England manager Terry Venables has written a series of crime novels.

If indeed Lampard has based his characters on his teammates, both current and former, it sure will be interesting to see how he portrays the likes of John Terry and Ashley Cole - now Cole in particular is sure to be an interesting character to read!
