Tyrann Mathieu Disputes Report of Over 10 Failed Drug Tests, Honey Badger First-Round Draft Option to New England Patriots?

Tyrann Mathieu made headlines once again on Friday after a USA Today report claimed the cornerback told NFL teams he failed over 10 drug tests during his time at LSU. While Mathieu makes his rounds interviewing with teams prior to the NFL draft, he claims the newspaper report is false and does not accurately reflect his discussions with teams.

An unnamed NFL assistant coach said in the report that Mathieu told teams he failed so many drug tests that he stopped keeping track after 10. The assistant believed that while Mathieu was getting most of the blame for his troubled past, a lot of fingers should be pointed at LSU for the problem as well. Mathieu contacted LSU officials on Friday to dispute the claims.

"It is irresponsible and shows a lack of integrity for anyone to disclose medical information regardless of how it was gathered. I would expect that conversations regarding my drug testing history during the course of my medical treatment would be private. LSU has a strong drug testing program and LSU went to great lengths to help me in my treatment and recovery," Mathieu said.

Mathieu has a well-documented history with drug problems. The multiple failed tests paired with arrests led him being kicked off the LSU football team and ultimately dismissed from the school. The former Heisman candidate was considered a lock to be a top-10 draft pick until he was forced to sit out the entire 2012 season.

Mathieu then attended drug rehab and has been busy working towards an NFL comeback. He has been adamant to being clean of all drugs since October. He then impressed scouts with a strong performance at the NFL combine and then again at LSU's Pro Day in mid-March. He has been an open book with teams during the interview process, proving to them that he is a changed man.

"I think they know everything already. I think they just want you to be honest with them. That was my best friend, coming into this offseason and going into this draft was, just be honest, and open," Mathieu said.

Originally, projected as a late second round, early third round draft pick, there is a chance the New England Patriots could draft him in the first round. The team has been scouting him heavily, bringing him in for interviews and workouts. If Mathieu really has put his past behind him, he will get taken off the board much sooner than expected.
