Brittney Griner Comes Out As Gay In Interview With Sports Illustrated, WNBA Draft Star Says She Already Was Out As A Lesbian (VIDEO)

Former Baylor Bears star Brittney Griner was one of the most dominating players in college basketball history and after being drafted number one overall in the WNBA Draft, she is now a star for the Phoenix Mercury and she is gay.

According to SI.com, Griner spoke in an interview with SI.com with fellow players Elena Della Donne and Skylar Diggins, who followed her as the No. 2 and No. 3 picks in the WNBA draft, and when asked about sexuality in sports, Griner spoke about her own. The Baylor star said that it's about being who you are, and said that people shouldn't hide who they are.

While that answer was vague, her next one was more direct, as she was asked by Maggie Gray "if it was harder for someone like a famous athlete to come out and be open about their sexuality. Griner said that "it wasn't too difficult" and that "I've always been open about who I am" and mentioned that she "was out."

Griner could be a shining example of how to handle things when it comes to homosexuality in sports and as such a large figure in women's basketball, she really could make an impact:

Her full quotes were:

"I really couldn't give an answer on why that's so different. Being one that's out, it's just being who you are. Again, like I said, just be who you are. Don't worry about what other people are going to say, because they're always going to say something, but, if you're just true to yourself, let that shine through. Don't hide who you really are."

"It really wasn't too difficult, I wouldn't say I was hiding or anything like that. I've always been open about who I am and my sexuality. So, it wasn't hard at all. If I can show that I'm out and I'm fine and everything's OK, then hopefully the younger generation will definitely feel the same way."
