Jacksonville Jaguars Rumors: Justin Blackmon Not Released After 4-Game Suspension for Violating NFL Substance Abuse Policy

Justin Blackmon has been a constant producer on the field for the Jacksonville Jaguars, but off the field he has seen his fair share of struggles. Just yesterday it was announced that Blackmon was suspended for four games in the 2013 season after violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. The former first-round pick was widely regarded as the best wide receiver in last year's NFL draft but has come with some baggage. Despite the suspension, the Jacksonville Jaguars have no plans on releasing Blackmon.

The Jaguars could have easily let Blackmon go. Due to language in his contract, they would not have to pay him any more money and could release him without repercussions to the team's financial standings. However, they intend on holding on to the No. 6 pick. In a statement released from general manager Dave Caldwell, he said he has spoken with Blackmon and the receiver is aware of the team's disappointment in him.

"I don't think there is any question that Justin is embarrassed and remorseful, and Coach Bradley and I are both confident he understands the obligations ahead of him, to himself, the franchise and the fans. We will support him throughout the process and continue to work to educate him and all of our players on making the right decisions," Caldwell said.

This is not the first time that Blackmon has had substance abuse issues. While playing at Oklahoma State, he was arrested for a DUI in 2010. He served a one-game suspension. He was then arrested onced against for a DUI in June of last year but received no discipline from the NFL. The wide receiver released an apology saying there is no excuse for his actions and he is sorry and disappointed in himself for the situation he has created.

"I have chosen to be accountable for my poor decision, and I sincerely apologize to my teammates, coaches, the front office and Jaguars fans for the impact of my mistake on the team," Blackmon said in his statement.

The Jaguars have no choice but to hold on to Blackmon. He was the team's best offensive producer last season. He played 16 games in his rookie season, catching 64 passes for 865 yards and five touchdowns. In order for Blaine Gabbert to have any chance at success in the upcoming season, he needs Blackmon. He ranked first among rookie receivers in targets and tied for first in yards recorded.
