Just when it looked like things could not get any better for Chelsea fans, after their side pulled off a last-gasp 2-1 win over Benfica in the Europa League final, it did with fan favorite Frank Lampard revealing he was close to signing a new deal to remain at Stamford Bridge for at least one more season.
Lampard was unlucky not to score in the Europa League final, with Benfica goalkeeper Artur Moraes keeping one shot out brilliantly, while another thunderous strike from 25 yards bounced off the crossbar.
The midfielder recently became the club's all-time leading goalscorer, beating Bobby Tambling's record of 202 goals with a brace against Aston Villa last weekend, which took his tally to 203.
However, the ecstasy for the 34-year-old has been tempered with the fact that his future remains murky with Chelsea yet to offer him a new contract. Lampard's current deal expires at the end of the season.
Reports prior to the Europa League final suggested Chelsea were finally ready to offer the legend a new deal, and now it looks like it is only a matter of time before it is confirmed.
"I really hope so," Lampard told ITV when asked if he thought he would be at Chelsea come next season.
"We're getting there, we haven't completely sat down on it but the club have been brilliant, it looks good."
Meanwhile, Chelsea defender David Luiz dedicated the Europa League title to manager Rafa Benitez. "It was a very difficult season, especially after the Champions League exit because last season we won that competition," the Brazilian, who was employed in midfield in the final, said. "It was a very demanding year.
"We were expected -- obliged -- to do very well after last year and there was pressure and demand from everyone.
"We lost three finals this season (FA Community Shield, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup) and now I want to dedicate this victory to Rafael Benitez because he did a wonderful job with us."
It was a bittersweet win for Luiz, who was with Benfica for four years before making the switch to Stamford Bridge in 2011.
"I left Benfica, a club that I loved, everyone knows I love that club," Luiz added. "It was difficult to leave but this is the reason I left Benfica -- for big titles like this.
"I am very happy that things are going well. Benfica played a great game. They had a great intensity and deserved to be in this final. They have top players and the coach does a great job with them.
"It was a very difficult game. They were fresher than us. So, as they were fresher our approach was to restrain their attacking intent.
"Our goal was to work like a sniper and to score at the right moments. I would have preferred to beat a different team in the final."
