Manchester City and United are both reportedly hot in pursuit of La Liga club Athletic Bilbao's midfielder Javi Martinez, according to a goal.com report.
The defending Premier League champions have long been linked with a move for the former Osasuna youngster.
However, United's rivals - City - are also believed to be keen on Martinez and will be confident of outbidding the champions. Reports suggest City manager Roberto Mancini has already sent scouts to watch the 23-year-old midfielder, who can also play as a defender, ahead of the summer transfer window.
In addition to the two Manchester clubs, other European elites like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool are also keeping tabs on Martinez.
The Basque, whose contract with Bilbao does not expire until 2016, has a release clause valued at over £30m. However, the club will be open to offers in the £25m region.
