New York Jets Rumors: Offseason Prediction Has Geno Smith Starting At Quarterback Over Mark Sanchez As Playoff Talk Gets QB In Trouble

The New York Jets season in 2012 was a total disaster and the team is hoping for a reboot in 2013 and one way that will go down is if Geno Smith wins the starting quarterback competition over Mark Sanchez and based on the way the Jets are doing things this offseason, the deck appears stacked in his favor.

According to Pro Football Talk, the Jets are not paying any attention to the headlines that are coming in from outside of the team and are focusing on their competition between Smith and Sanchez and could decide on a starter before training camp is over. While some may think that is a good sign for Sanchez, it likely means that the team will go with Smith early to give him a chance to get used to being the number one starter and getting acclimated with the offense. Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg is happy with the way Smith is getting the offense and that could help him down the line with the Jets to win the job.

The report says that the Jets will likely pick a starter earlier in training camp so that the number one guy can start taking all the first team reps. The report also suggests that the Jets want him to battle a bit, but that the job is already his. The team wants to put Smith in as good of a position to succeed as they can and the early decision could help that. Mornhinweg said that the team will continue competing if the two players are close, but that the priority is finding the quarterback that will help the team win games. Apparently that wasn't Tim Tebow, despite the fact that he led a team to a playoff win more recently than both Sanchez and Smith, as he is a free agent now.

Smith was a second round pick and has been called a diva by many in the media after sulking at the draft, firing his agents and appearing to be very self-involved, but according to the Jets he has been excellent learning the playbook and around the facility with the team. Smith already ruffled some feathers when he said on the radio that he felt the team could make the playoffs this season, but he has moved on from that.

Smith said that the media spotlight has helped him so far in New York and he is now getting closer to signing with Jay-Z's new company for his sports representation. Smith is the heir apparent in New York and the team wants him to be the starter in 2013.
