It happens every year, teams enter into OTAs with the mindset of just stretching their legs and getting slightly back into football rhythm before training camps start up and yet, someone goes down with injury. Players are not yet ready to go full speed and something happens. Terrell Suggs and Da'Quan Bowers have both been on the receiving end of this trend. Already this season, San Diego Chargers defensive end Melvin Ingram tore his ACL and is out for the year. Now, Michael Crabtree is the next to go down. The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver tore his Achilles during workouts on Tuesday and will likely miss the entire season.
Both Suggs and Bowers experienced injuries early in OTAs and were able to come back and play that season. Suggs made an appearance in the postseason. Bowers was able to play for most of the regular season in 2012 after injury. These cases are rare, but can happen.
Crabtree emerged as one of the best offensive threats for the 49ers. Last season, he was one of the team's best wide receivers. He recorded 1,105 yards on 85 catches and had nine touchdowns. He looked equally impressive in the postseason, helping lead San Francisco to a Super Bowl appearance. Without him on the roster, the 49ers are not nearly as deadly.
Now, Anquan Boldin will likely be the go-to guy. San Francisco got him in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens early in the offseason. While Boldin is proven talent at receiver, he is not the downfield threat that Crabtree is. Mario Manningham is the other marquee name on the roster, but again, not nearly as deadly as Crabtree.
This injury will likely force the 49ers to look into the free agent market and grab a veteran for the season. The market is thin at wide receiver but there are a few options. The 49ers will likely look for a veteran they can sign to a short-term contract just for the year. They have shown little interest in Randy Moss who played for the team last year. He has been considering retirement and might not be ready to get back on the field.
The best option could be Terrelle Owens. The veteran has a great history with the 49ers and his familiarity with the team could work in his favor. He is clearly still in football shape. Owens was last seen working out with Tom Brady in California, proving that he has maintained his football fitness level. The 49ers can easily sign him for the bare minimum and might get some quality production out of Owens if it works out.
