Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is the best player in the NFL after winning the MVP and rushing for over 2,000, but the star is more narrow minded than many previously realized, as he has said he is against gay marriage.
According to ESPN.com, the running back said in an interview with NFL radio that he respects gay people, including those in his family, but that gay marriage fits in as "not something I believe in." The running back's comments came after the team cut outspoken punter Chris Kluwe, who said he previously was for gay rights in public. Peterson said it hurt him to see the punter leave and the Vikings covered their tracks to avoid cutting him for his beliefs, making sure everyone in the NFL knew that they weren't happy with his performance and also drafting a punter in the fifth round of the draft.
Kluwe is now signed with the Oakland Raiders and Peterson made the comments saying: "To each his own, [but] I'm not with it," he said. "I have relatives who are gay. I'm not biased towards them. I still treat them the same. I love 'em. But again, I'm not with that. That's not something I believe in. But to each his own," he said. Peterson said he didn't think the team released the punter due to his beliefs, but what else would he say at this point anyway, as he still is an employee. The state of Minnesota adopted gay marriage and it will be legal in August, with Peterson on the other side of the argument.
Peterson is one of the best players in the NFL, but clearly based on his statements he is not as accepting as other players, and there is a chance he could lose some fans based on his statement. The Vikings made the playoffs last season and he won the MVP after rushing for over 2,000 yards.
