The Los Angeles Dodgers are having a tough season out West after spending a ton of money overhauling their roster over the past year and due to that the front office has decided to promote their top prospect in Yasiel Puig, who will join the team on Monday.
According to ESPN.com, the team will likely use Puig as the center fielder while dealing with injuries to Matt Kemp, who is on the DL, as well as Carl Crawford. The Dodgers are dealing with injuries up and down the lineup and have struggled this season, including in a loss on Sunday 7-2 against the Colorado Rockies, who are contending for the division lead. Puig has been playing well in the minors while hitting over .310 with eight home runs in Double-A and will start immediately.
Things did not go well for Puig at the beginning of the season when he was arrested on reckless driving charges for speeding in Chattanooga in April and he now will join the big league club. Puig was signed to a $42 million contract in the offseason and the Dodgers have spent over $200 million on the payroll this year while going just 23-32 and sitting over eight games behind the division leading Diamondbacks. The team has struggled with injuries all season and rank 28th in runs and 14th in batting average. The team ranks 25th in slugging and 11th in on base percentage and the Dodgers hope Puig can give a jolt to the lineup.
Crawford is also out for the team after being injured on Saturday against the Rockies due to a hamstring injury and that will test the depth even more for Don Mattingly and the Dodgers roster. Crawford is having a good season after dealing with injuries since being traded from the Red Sox, hitting over .300 with five home runs and 13 RBIs in 51 games this season. Crawford likely will not be out long term, but he joins Matt Kemp and Hanley Ramirez as star players who are dealing with injuries.
