The Oakland Raiders were a team of dysfunction through the 2000's and so far it has been the same in the 2010's, but one thing that always remained steady was the leg of punter Shane Lecher, who left the team in free agency to sign with the Houston Texans.
According to the Houston Chronicle, Lechler spoke about leaving his old team and joining his new one and said that he has no hard feelings towards the Raiders after signing a three year deal with the Texans. After the punter left he said there was some bitterness in him about the move, but now that has subsided as he makes a new home with the Texans. Lechler is one of the best punters ever and he went to the pro bowl seven times and was an All-Pro nine times while also making it onto the All Decade team for the 2000's.
Lechler spent 13 seasons with the Raiders and after they didn't get into talks with him about a contract, he realized it was time to move on. Lechler at one point was the highest paid punter after signing a four year, $16 million contract in 2009, but now the team will move on with Chris Kluwe the likely replacement for him on the Raiders. Lechler played at Texas A&M and signing with the Texans was a sort of homecoming. Lechler said things could be dysfunctional at times with the Raiders, saying there was a lot of change on the team throughout his years there, especially the Al Davis years.
Lechler said he feels good about his new team and that he thought it was good that the Raiders brought back Charles Woodson. Lechler likely will get the chance to go to the playoffs in 2013, something he hadn't done for a while with the Raiders. The Texans are expected to contend for a Super Bowl and that is something the punter hopes to be a part of.
