The Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks have some animosity in the AL West and that carried over into the game on Tuesday night, as the two teams got into a bench clearing brawl after pitchers Zack Greinke and Ian Kennedy went back and forth throwing at each other after Yasiel Puig was hit with a pitch in the face.
The Dodgers won the game 5-3, but the teams fought in the seventh inning as things boiled over as players were hit with pitches in the game, including Puig as well as Greinke himself. The benches cleared earlier without a fight, but after Kennedy retaliated, the two teams went at each other and it meant more that Greinke was on the mound after the fight he got in earlier in the season. Puig was okay to stay in the game, but the move prompted Greinke to hit Miguel Montero with a pitch and then the two teams went back and forth.
Players and coaches were ejected and Dodgers manager Don Mattingly was furious. Puig, Ronald Belisario and hitting coach Mark McGwire were ejected from the game, as were Kennedy, manager Kirk Gibson and Ward for the Diamondbacks. The manager's said noting was ordered and things escalated quickly.
"If you can't pitch inside without hitting somebody in the head, then you shouldn't pitch inside," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "So, [Puig] gets hit in the face, Montero gets hit in the back, it's over. It continued on. Talk is cheap. It doesn't matter. It's a good win for us."
In Los Angeles, the Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks exchanged punches in a heated brawl that led to five ejections as the home team went on to win 5-3. Arizona pitcher Ian Kennedy hit Zach Greinke with a pitch in the seventh inning, believed to be in retaliation for the Dodgers starter hitting a D-Backs player earlier, to set off a bench-clearing brawl in which several punches thrown.
Both managers were ejected, along with Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig and hitting coach Mark McGwire, as well as Arizona's assistant hitting coach Turner Ward.
