The Doncaster Rovers pulled off a very popular move with teenage girls this week, as they signed One Direction star Louis Tomlinson to a non-player contract to join the team and help raise money for charity.
According to Yahoo Sports, Tomlinson signed with the team and was assigned the No. 28 jersey by chairman John Ryan, who said that wearing that jersey links back to the number he played with for his 2003 record-beating appearance at Hereford. The report says that the 21-year-old signed for the 2013-14 season and that he will make an appearance for the club to raise money for the Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice and it comes as Tomlinson is a huge fan of the club.
The singer said it was a dream come true and that he was honored to join the Rovers and to raise money for charity. Tomlinson previously appeared at a charity match for the club at Keepmoat Stadium Doncaster last year and Ryan mentioned that the two put together the charity game last year for the Hospice as well. The quote said that 9,000 fans came out for the event and that it was a success that led to this move now. The chief exec of the hospice, Claire Rintoul, said that she is thrilled about the news and hopes for success.
"Being a local lad it's great to see him giving back to the community and supporting our children with a shortened life expectancy," she said. "He's visited us now on more than one occasion and met some of our children and their families who are all so excited that he is championing our cause."
"This has always been a childhood dream for me," he told the club's official website. "I feel very honored to have been asked to sign for Rovers and being able to help both the club and the amazing charity Bluebell Wood is what it's all about."
