The Detroit Tigers won the first game of the four-game series and now they will look to extend that lead behind Justin Verlander. However, the Cleveland Indians will send their ace, Justin Masterson to the hill Tuesday night as they look to even the series. Check out the live stream, but let's look at this pitching matchup.
Masterson is the better pitcher coming into the meeting. Yes, that might sound weird, but Verlander hasn't been anywhere near the dominant pitcher from 2011 or 2012. He's 11-8 with a 3.88 ERA. However, he's coming off a dominant performance against the Washington Nationals where he went six innings, giving up a run on four hits and five walks, while striking out six. In his pervious two starts, Verlander had surrendered 12 earned runs in 11.2 innings, proving him more inconsistent than naybody could have imagined.
Masterson also had a great performance last week against the Chicago White Sox. In act, Masterson hasn't lost since July 5. In his last four starts, he's given up four earned runs over 28 innings pitched for a microscopic 1.29 ERA.
The good news for the Tigers, they were the team responsible for the July 5 lost. They pounded Masterson for six earned runs, watching him exit the game before the conclusion of the fifth inning. Masterson hasn't had too much luck against the Tigers this year or in his career. Masterson is a career 2-8 with a 5.50 ERA in 75.1 innings pitched against Detroit. Prince Fielder is hitting .364 in 11 at-bats with a home run. Torii Hunter has owned Masterson in 18 at-bats, hitting .333 with three home runs and five RBI. Miguel Cabrera is hitting .393 in 28 at-bats with two home runs and nine RBI.
This matchup could either be a pitchers' duel or a slaughter. While nobody in the Indians has hit Verlander hard individually, in three games against the Indians, the Tigers' ace is 2-1 with a whopping 5.82 ERA. On June 7, the Indians managed three runs on seven hits off Verlander, who pitched seven innings, for his best outing against the Indians in 2013.
