Arsenal Transfer News: Gervinho Seals Roma Move; Walcott Confident of Challenging Even Without Luis Suarez

This summer for Arsenal has been all about letting the fringe players on high salaries leave the club and that trend continued unabated with Gervinho sealing his move to Italian side Roma.

The Ivory Coast international has had a bit of a nightmare during his time with Arsenal, with the 26-year-old set to be remembered for his numerous simple misses rather than his positive contributions.

Arsenal confirmed the move on Thursday, with the fee thought to be in the region of £7 million ($11 million).

"Gervinho has joined Italian Serie A side AS Roma for an undisclosed fee," Arsenal said in a statement on their official website.

"Everyone at Arsenal would like to thank Gervinho for his contribution to the club and wish him well for his future career."

Meanwhile, Theo Walcott has backed the possible arrival of Luis Suarez from Liverpool, but remains confident his side can pose a threat to the Premier League title even without the presence of a marquee summer signing.

Arsenal have seen two bids rejected by Liverpool for Suarez, but a move still remains possible with the striker making his intentions on leaving the Anfield side clear.

Walcott, though, is not too concerned about the situation and believes Arsenal have a string enough squad to compete for honors next season.

"If he (Suarez) comes, great," Walcott said.

"Even if we stay as we are now, we are a great team and we showed that in the last 10 games last season.

"We just need to do that a bit more on a consistent level at the start of this year but every player who is at Arsenal is a top-class player.

"You're not going to get an average player come to Arsenal, I think that every player that is here is a top-class player. The boss has believed in so many players he has brought in and they have done so well."
