The Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals meet for Game 2 of their series. The Cardinals will try to use the momentum established in the series opener as they rallied late to come back from an 0-3 deficit. Watch the game free online at 8:15 p.m. ET.
The Cardinals took advantage of Starling Marter's ninth inning error that allowed Daniel Descalso to reach second base. Allen Craig took charge, tying the game in the bottom of the ninth, sending things into extra innings. The Cardinals took the first game in extra innings on an Adron Chambers walk-off single that drove in Jon Jay.
On the mound today, it should be an exquisite matchup, the Pirates have Francisco Liriano facing Shelby Miller. Liriano has had a shocking 2013 campaign, while Miller has surprised many in his first season in the big leagues. Liriano is 12-5 with a 2.83 ERA so far in 2013. However, he's coming off a rough start against the Colorado Rockies. After allowing 12 earned runs in his last nine starts, the Rockies tagged Liriano for 10 earned runs over 2.1 innings pitched. It was a horrendous start that Pirate fanatics hope is already in the past.
Miller has yet to give up 10 earned runs in a start. In fact, in Miller has been so spectacular, he's only surrendered four or more runs three times in his short career. Miller only threw two pitches in his last start before being removed from the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Liriano has had great success in 2013 against the Cardinals. He is 1-0 with them in his single start, pitching seven innings of one-run baseball, giving up just four hits, two walks and recording eight strikeouts. Miller has yet to beat the PIrates. He's 0-2, though he hasn't pitched terribly against the Bucs. He's given up five earned runs in 11.2 innings pitched. However, this was back in April. Cardinal faithfuls hope Miller can get his first victory agains the Pirates, which would then place the red birds just one game behind first place.
