The San Francisco 49ers are set with their starting quarterback already with Colin Kaepernick taking over last season for Alex Smith, but the answer to who will play behind him as the backup is a question that head coach Jim Harbaugh is still trying to consider, as Colt McCoy, Scott Tolzien and BJ Daniels have all gotten snaps and now Seneca Wallace may be in the mix.
According to ESPN.com, the 49ers are interested in bringing in Wallace, as he is a similar player style wise to Kaepernick and he also is familiar with Eric Mangini, who was hired as a consultant for the franchise. Wallace is having a visit with the team and shows that Harbaugh has been frustrated with the play of backups McCoy and Tolzien, although he has expressed his happiness with the way Daniels, a late round pick, has played.
McCoy was acquired over the summer in a trade with the Browns, where Wallace served as the backup before moving on. Wallace has been a backup in Seattle previously and it is likely that they will keep Wallace and McCoy while ditching Tolzien, as Harbaugh gave up a pick for McCoy. Mangini was with both players previously with the Browns and bringin in the 33-year-old is an interesting move, as he did not play last season after being cut by the Browns.
Wallace is originally from Northern California and he has played in 62 games with 21 starts over the past seven years and comparing him and McCoy show some similar production. According to ESPN.com, the two have started 17 games and 21 games respectively, with McCoy starting more and producing more yards. Wallace has one less touchdown and 12 fewer interceptions and their completion percentages as well as their yards per attempt are basically the same.
Harbaugh has an interesting choice to make, as he likes Daniels and used a trade to get McCoy. Kaepernick is clearly the starter, but if he gets hurt Harbaugh wants a steady quarterback that can come in and keep things going.
