If you were born before 2007, you probably do not remember the Red Sox and Cardinals playing in the 2004 World Series. Since both teams met in the World Series that year, they have gone on to win two championship. For the Red Sox, they broke the "curse" after beating the Cardinals in 2004 and then won it again in 2007. Boston fans and New York fans quickly found out that there was no curse, the Red Sox simply could not get their game together for 86 years. The Cardinals won their championships in 2006 and 2011.
It is safe to say that neither of these teams were expected to be here at the start of the season. If anything, many thought the Los Angeles Dodgers would make a run in the N.L. and maybe the Washington Nationals, who are stacked with young talent and were coming off a disappointing 2012 playoff campaign. In the A.L., the Red Sox were repairing and rebuilding rather than preparing themselves for a World Series run. Many had their eyes set on the Detroit Tigers or maybe even the Toronto Blue Jays after they took on half the Miami Marlins' payroll.
"Expect the unexpected motherf8%$^*)s!" That's what Method Man said in "Dirty Mef" as ODB was featured in his song. Ol' Dirty Bastard had passed away years before, but he was revived in this track by his former Wu-Tang companion. The Cardinals and the Red Sox were revived in 2013. For the Cardinals it was their young pitching, while the scrappy veterans have the Red Sox deep in the postseason.
The Red Sox and Cardinals both finished the regular season with a 97-65 record. The Red Sox had a little more success in the playoffs, playing a game less. However, the Cardinals clinched first and will have an extra day of rest, which is perfect for traveling.
Both teams have their heroes and their MVP's. They have veteran players who have yet to win championships and exciting youngsters making a difference. Which veteran will break down first? Which rookie will commit the first error? The World Series kicks off on Wednesday, make sure to catch Game 1.
