Euro 2012: Czech Republic Win; Russia Held By Poland

A brilliant goal from Poland captain Jakub Blaszczykowski helped the hosts rescue a point against group favorites Russia.

In the earlier Group A match, two goals in the first six minutes helped the Czech Republic beat Greece 2-1.

In a match of great political significance, ugly scenes outside the ground threatened to mar the keenly anticipated match, but both Russia and Poland kept the focus on the field with a thrilling 1-1 draw.

Alan Dzagoev scored his third goal of the tournament, heading in a neat cross from the impressive Andrei Arshavin in the 37th minute. However, a wonderful strike from outside the box from Blaszczykowski ensured Poland their second-straight 1-1 draw.

Arshavin was disappointed not to pick up three points, even though Russia are now in pole position to win the group with four points overall. "We started well and took the lead. But, after the break, we played too loosely, allowing Poland to reply on dangerous counter-attacks."

Russia's coach, Dick Advocaat, however, said he was happy with a point.

"Poland played very well tonight, being under the risk of losing the chance to win a place in the last eight if they lost.

"We allowed them to create too many chances in attack. That means we still need to strengthen our defence. We also played well and scored before the break and had many chances in the second.

"But we missed them all. In general, I would say the draw is a good result for us."

Poland coach Franciszek Smuda was also content with a draw. "We are a young side, and we are going to get ever better.

"I am above all happy with the players because they played to the game plan from the first to last minute."

In the earlier match, goals from Petr Jiracek and Vaclav Pilar helped Czech Republic take all three points. Greece, initially shell-shocked by the early goals, pulled one back through Theofanis Gekas, thanks to a blunder from goalkeeper Petr Cech, but the Czech's held on for a win, which saw their captain Thomas Rosicky limp off at half-time.

"It was a great start and this time we were fortunate enough to score two goals," Czech coach Michal Bilek said.

"In the first half we were great, our combinations were good, we were dangerous and the goals proved that.

"The second half was complicated because Rosicky could not play on and it took us time to get back in the game.

"With Rosicky, it was his achilles so it was unpleasant for him and we will see tomorrow what the extent of the problem us, but obviously we hope he will be there for the third match in the group as he is an important player.

"We missed him in the second half as he is a key player for us in attack as he can add tempo our game."

Russia lead the group with four points, one more than the Czech Republic. Poland have two points while Greece have one.
