The Minnesota Vikings are one of many teams attempting to figure out their quarterback situation. The team attempted three different players last year at the position and no one panned out. General manager Rick Spielman is aware the clock is ticking to figure out a solution on a new franchise quarterback to take over. While it is assumed the Vikings will draft a rookie in the first round of the NFL draft, running back Adrian Peterson has another idea.
Peterson has said he plans on being vocal regarding the offseason moves of Minnesota. The running back already attempted to lobby for former head coach Leslie Frazier, but the team opted to fire him anyways. Now, Peterson is weighing in on the quarterback situation. While the quarterback has remained supportive towards Christian Ponder, he likes someone else.
Peterson took to Twitter to endorse the Vikings bringing in free-agent-to-be Michael Vick. The running back tweeted out, "Michael Vick would intently make the Vikings a playoff team." Bold statement from Peterson. The two athletes are friends so maybe Peterson is just trying to drive up the market for the quarterback. The Philadelphia Eagles are intent with letting Vick test the free agent market and while the quarterback intends on being a starter again, he seems likely to be given a backup role, even in Minnesota.
If the Vikings take a look at Vick, it will not be as a starter. He will be viewed as a backup, used to develop a young quarterback the team drafts. Right now, many NFL experts have the Vikings taking either Blake Bortles, Teddy Bridgewater or Derek Carr with their first round pick.
The jury is still out on Ponder. Many predict that the former first-round pick will be released in the offseason, but Spielman is singing a different tune.
"Christian will be here; I don't anticipate anything - him not being here," Spielman said, via Master Tesfatsion of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Ponder has already gotten an endorsement from new offensive coordinator Norv Turner. Now it appears he has the backing of the general manager as well. Things could be looking up for his future. The quarterback is set to earn $1.7 million next season which makes him reasonably priced to keep around. As for Vick, a Peterson endorsement might go a long way.
