English Premier League Transfer News: Swansea Complete Signings of De Guzman, Chico

Swansea City have strengthened their squad by bringing in attacking midfielder Jonathan de Guzman on a season-long loan deal from Villarreal and completing the permanent signing of Jose Manuel Flores from Genoa.

De Guzman joins up with Swansea manager Michael Laudrup having previously played under him at Mallorca. The 24-year-old completed a medical on Tuesday and signed a one-year loan deal with the option to make the move permanent.

"Once the opportunity came along to join Swansea and Michael Laudrup it was a done deal," De Guzman told the club's official website. "I didn't have to think twice about it.

"I watched Premier League football every week on the TV last season. I was aware that Swansea are a good footballing side, but they really caught my eye when they beat Manchester City.

"They had a great season and I'm really looking forward to the challenge of playing on a new podium in the Premier League.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity and grateful that the manager has acknowledged me as a player."

Born in Ontario, Canada, De Guzman moved to the Netherlands to join Feyenoord's youth academy, where he made over 100 appearances.

He played under Laudrup at Mallorca on a free transfer in 2010 before being sold to Villarreal for around £7 million ($11 million) in 2011.

De Guzman, however, found game time hard to come by in Villarreal, as the Spanish club were surprisingly relegated last season.

"I didn't get much game time when the new coach came in," he said. "It was a frustrating time for me.

"I just want to play on a regular basis again. I'm fortunate that I will be working under a good coach (Laudrup) at Swansea who lets you be free and allows you to do what you do best.

"I like to attack as a midfielder, box to box, and hopefully I can add my share of goals along the way."

Earlier, Swansea confirmed the signing of Spanish defender Flores - popularly known as Chico for an initial £2 million ($3.1 million) fee plus potential add-ons. Chico signed a three-year contract with the Welsh club.

"I'm very happy to be here,'' Chico said. "I know I am joining a club that has been growing over the last few years and is still ambitious to go even higher.

""Having played in La Liga and Serie A, two great leagues, it's a dream come true to play in the Premier League, one of the best, if not the best, in the world."

Chico has also played for Laudrup in Mallorca and admitted the Danish legend's presence was a big factor in his decision to move to the English Premier League.

"He was one of the main reasons I signed," Chico said. "He knows me as a person and a player, so I was honored when the call came.

"I believe the manager will be good for Swansea and they have done extremely well to get him. Swansea's way of playing is the same style as he wants to play the game. He is the right person to take this club forward."

Meanwhile, Swansea cancelled the contract of Scott Donnelly by mutual consent. Donnelly, 24, joined the Swans from Aldershot Town in 2010, but made just one league appearance as a substitute.
