NBA Free Agency: Lakers Make Deal With Nash Official

The Los Angeles Lakers officially announced Wednesday their acquisition of two-time MVP Steve Nash from the Phoenix Suns.

As part of the sign-and-trade deal, the Suns received first-round draft picks in 2013 and 2015 as well as second-round draft picks in 2013 and 2014.

The signing of Nash will arguably leave the Lakers with the league's best starting lineup. Nash gives Kobe Bryant a vibrant, highly intelligent playmaker that will help the team pick-and-roll opponents into submission.

Nash received a three-year deal for an estimated $27 million. The 38-year-old Nash was a free agent but a sign-and-trade agreement was necessary for the Lakers to afford him.

Some general managers around the league are displeased with the move.

They feel that the Lakers are now even stronger contenders with Nash at point. Though Nash is old and likely cannot keep up with the younger points, like Russell Westbrook or Tony Parker, he provides the Lakers with a clear play caller aside from Kobe Bryant.

Nash, a well seasoned veteran, has played 16 seasons and averaged 14.5 points with 8.6 assists in seasons with Phoenix and Dallas. He was drafted in the first round by the Suns in 1996 and was traded to Dallas in June of 1998, he later rejoined the Suns via free agency prior to the 2004-05 season.
