Houston Rockets Rumors: Rajon Rondo, Goran Dragic Free Agency Targets for Dwight Howard, James Harden, Ricky Rubio Trade Option if Patrick Beverley Struggles

The Houston Rockets are one of the many teams that will be making the point guard position come next offseason. The Rockets traded away Jeremy Lin and are relying on Patrick Beverley to get the starting point guard for the upcoming season. That may or may not be enough to get Houston the success they are expecting this year. The free agency class of 2015 has some of the biggest names at the point guard position and the Rockets plan on chasing the best.

While it is unlikely the Rockets will trade for anyone marquee during the season unless injuries take place, the team can make a run at a max-contract guy come free agency. 2014 did not go well for Houston. They missed out on just about everyone they pursued including Chris Bosh and Carmelo Anthony. Lin left as did Chandler Parsons and Omer Asik. Some believe the team might take a step back this upcoming season, something they will rectify in 2015.

According to ESPN.com, the Rockets will chase either Rajon Rondo or Goran Dragic this upcoming offseason in order to help make their very own "Big 3" for the future. Right now, the Rockets lack a lot of depth after they tried to clear a bunch of cap space thinking they were signing Bosh to a max deal. That has set them up to have plenty of cap space in 2015 with the ability to go after a big name. Dragic and Rondo will be the best available. Rondo will be an unrestricted free agent and will likely test the market before determining whether or not to leave Boston. Dragic is talent on a crowded roster. He has a player option, but has already stated he will opt out. Phoenix likely will not win a bidding war on the point guard considering their salary cap cannot take on a new contract for him.

Getting either Dragic or Rondo makes the Rockets an immediate contender. Right now, they lack someone that is an elite playmaker. Beverley is not that guy yet. Rondo or Dragic would combine with James Harden and Dwight Howard to make one of the strongest trios in the league. It would be highly similar to what the Celtics created with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.

For now the Rockets must sit tight. General manager Daryl Morey has his eyes on the bigger picture after missing out on so many people this offseason. The Rockets will land a big name next summer, it just remains to be seen who that name is.
