New York Mets Rumors: Matt Harvey Replacing Dillon Gee in Pitching Rotation?

They called it Matt Harvey's audition for the New York Mets in Monday start against Toledo.

Many are saying that he was not spectacular, he definitely was not sharp, but nonetheless, the Mets might be looking at their future starter and Dillon Gee's replacement.

Harvey held Toledo to two earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched. He threw 100 pitches and carried a no-hit bid all the way to the sixth inning.

If you ask Harvey he will tell you he was displeased with Monday's performance as his command was off. He walked four batters in the game and struck out four.

All of this was done in front of Mets' executive J.P. Ricciardi and it could possibly be his last start in the minors.

So far in the 2012 minor league campaign, Harvey has had solid numbers.

He has made 10 starts for the Buffalo Bisons, the Mets' Triple-A affiliate. Harvey has a 3-3 record with a 2.53 earned runs average as the right-hander has only given up three runs in a start twice in the year.

Now the Mets have the chance to get a young arm to the majors, without having trade for the free agent pitchers that would likely leave a whole in their farm system.

Already without superstars, except for David Wright, the Mets have been able to do it with unknown players who are performing with no pressure.

The last thing they would need is to hand over young talent that could help in them in the near future.

Harvey is only 23-years-old. Getting him a few starts in the majors could give him a good boost. A brief stint in the majors could help better the player's development as Harvey could find out exactly what he can work on.

Currently, the Mets are in third place behind the Atlanta Braves and the Washington Nationals. They trail the Braves 3.5 games, while they Nationals have a six-game lead of the Mets.
