Olympics 2012 Swimming Results: Michael Phelps Loses In 400m IM, Ryan Lochte Gets the Gold, Complete Standings of Race

Ryan Lochte ended Michael Phelps reign as champion of the 400m Individual Medley. He had a tremendous lead as soon as they hit the second leg of the event.

Lochte great with his backstroke took advantage and build his lead.

His posture and mechanics in the leg are almost perfect as his head is always very still. By the time they hit the butterfly stroke Lochte had a huge lead. Lochte was even challenging the record pace. Close to the end of the event. When Lochte hit the freestyle stroke he had a chance to break the record, but without a doubt, he ran out of gas and the record eluded him. 

He took the gold, Brazil's Pereira took silver and Hagino took third. There was no medal for Phelps in this competition.

Phelps in eighth lane due to his last place entry into the 400m IM. He was struggling to keep up with Lochte, most noticeably in the backstroke. By the time they hit the freestyle stroke Lochte was gone.

Lochte swam a 4:05.18, Thiago Pereira came in with 4:08.86, Kosuke Hagino swam a 4:08.94. Phelps came in at 4:09.28. Chad Le Clos had a 4:12.42. Yuya Horihata posted a time of 4:13.30.. Thomas Fraser-Holmes swam a 4:13.49 and last place belonged to Italian Luc Marin with a 4:14.89.
