Roger Federer will face Julien Benneteau in the second round of preliminaries on Monday morning. Federer will try to continue being the most male tennis player as he continues to search for his first gold medal in single's competition.
Federer might not admit that he is searching for gold in the event, but winning is what Federer does best in tennis.
He will play in his match against France's Benneteau. Benneteau comes into the London 2012 Olympics unranked. He took part in the 2012 Australian Open and was bounced in the first round.
Benneteau, who is nicknamed Bennet, is ranked 32nd in the world according to ATP.
Federer and Bennet met recently in the third round at Wimbledon.
Of course, Federer won that match, but Benneteau came very close to upseting the then ranked 3rd player in the tournament.
It took Federer five sets to defeat the Frenchman and at one point found himself down 0-2. Bennet took the first two sets 6-4, 7-6. Federer rallied back and took the next two sets 6-2, 7-6. Then he easily put Benneteau away in a decisive fifth set 6-1.
At the time, Federer had been going through his back issues. After the win, it was wondered if he would be able to compete and win in the tournament. Federer put away any doubts of his ability to perform with strong performances in the quarterfinals and semifinals.
He went through Novak Djokovic in the semis and then face Great Britain's favorite, Andy Murray in the Finals, where he captured the title
The action from Wimbledon kicks off a little after 8 a.m. ET/2 p.m. GMT from Centre Court.
