Serena Williams will face Russia's Vera Zvonareva in second round after a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Urszula Radwanska.Serena Williams said that the score in her win over Radwanska, sister of world No. 2 Agnieska Radwanska, disguised a difficult match.
"It was tough conditions, a little windy. I'm glad I was able to pull through," she said.
Though Williams expressed her difficulty she remained impressive, notching eight aces and 26 total winners to only 16 unforced errors, and was never in danger throughout the match.
Zvonareva awaits in the third round after a 6-3, 6-3 win over former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone, stretching her unbeaten record against the Italian to 11 matches.
"No matter what I tried today it worked," Zvonareva said.
"She has so much experience, so it's nice to have this win."
Elsewhere, world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka will play Spanish player Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in the second round after dropping a set as she beat Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
Venus Williams also advanced in her first match Monday, defeating French Open runner-up and Italian Sara Errani. The Williams sisters will compete in women's doubles later on Monday.
