The PGA Tour and Euro Tour are heading into Sunday for final round action from the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship and Sony Open tournaments and in the United Arab Emirates, Rory McIlroy and Martin Kaymer are battling, with Kaymer leading the way heading out of round 3, while Matt Kuchar and Webb Simpson are in the lead in Hawaii.
Kaymer comes in with the lead over McIlroy, who is now in fifth and Kaymer comes in at 20-under overall with a six stroke lead after a 65 in round three. Kaymer has been excellent and he put in a 64 before a 67 score and now he is tops over the field, with McIlroy putting up a 71 for his worst score among the three rounds. Kaymer is looking to win for the fourth time in eight years at this tournament and he comes in after previously winning the US Open.
Here is an update from Friday: The European Tour and PGA Tour are in action this week from the Sony Open and in the United Arab Emirates for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship and Rory McIlroy is playing on the Euro side and he comes into things right in the mix after notching his first hole in one, while Martin Kaymer leads going into the weekend for round three.
McIlroy is coming back this season after having a great year in 2014 and he put in his first ever hole in one while playing in the HSBC tournament. McIlroy is the favorite to win the first major of the year and he comes in at third on the leaderboard heading into the weekend. Martin Kaymer is in the lead coming into Saturday and McIlroy will be back in action after a strong back nine performance that put him in position to be in the top three.
McIlroy pulled off the hole in one on the 15th hole, which is a par three and it came after a hit with a 9-iron that went 177 yards and into the hole. McIlroy had never had a hole in one in his career and that put him in third place at 11 under, two shots back of the lead heading into the weekend. Between Kaymer and McIlroy there are three majors from last year and the two are shaping up to have strong seasons in 2015.
Kaymer comes in after putting in a great performance and he had a first round 64 and ended up with a 67 in the second round. Kaymer won the US Open and now he has the chance to get off to a great start here at the tournament in Abu Dhabi. Thomas Pieters ended up in second heading into the weekend and he has the chance to keep things going as well. McIlroy said that he has made about 10 holes in one in his playing life, but none on the major tours.
McIlroy is planning to play in the Honda Classic this year and that could be his first start on the PGA Tour. McIlroy said that he will play at the tournament and it comes after he missed out on winning it last year in a playoff and he previously played the tournament in 2012 and won by two shots, with Tiger Woods just coming up short. Woods is starting the season in Phoenix and he comes back after an injury plagued season in 2014.
The PGA Tour schedule has the Humana Challenge next and then it's the Waste Management Phoenix Open in Arizona, which is always a big tournament. Woods will be playing there and he also will be playing at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. Woods has won that tournament numerous times and he feels that coming back there could be big for his turnaround season.
