The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday 5-4 and with the victory they remain in first place in the American League East as the Baltimore Orioles also won out in Camden Yards.

Curtis Granderson carried the Yankees in their game as he went 2-5 with two home runs and finished with three RBI. His first homer came in the 4th inning off of Aaron Cook for the first run of the game. He then extended the Yankee lead with a bomb that proved to be the game winner off of Aceves in the 7th inning with a man on base.

It was not all good news in the game for the Yankees. Captain Derek Jeter left at the conclusion of the top of the eighth. Jeter ran down first base to hustle out a double play and might have pulled something or jammed something as he landed on the bag. They are saying it is a bone bruise in his left ankle.

The Red Sox added a little drama as manager Bobby Valentine was thrown out of the game after arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire Alfonzo Marquez. 

Cody Ross was thrown out before as Rafael Soriano hung a breaking ball right at the knees. Ross thought it was low and let everybody know he was upset. 

That strikeout proved pivotal as Jarrod Saltalamacchia led the ninth with a home run that made it 5-4. The Red Sox did not capitalize as Aviles reached on base in the ninth with two outs as Jacoby Ellsbury could not repeat as the hero once again. 

The two teams will close out their series tomorrow at 7 p.m. ET.

The Yankees and Orioles are 80-62 and sit at the top of the AL East.
