NLDS Game 1 Nationals vs. Cardinals Result and Final Score: Unlikely Hero Wins it for Washington

The Washington Nationals won the first game of the NLDS against the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals as they battled back late in the game winning on a two-out hit by Tyler Moore.

There were runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the eighth inning. Suzuki struck out, unable to drive in Michael Morse, who had reached on an error by shortstop Pete Kozma, from third base.

With two strikes, Moore sent a soft liner to right field, scoring Morse and Danny Espinosa from second for the 3-2 lead.

The Cardinals held a lead from early in the game, but Michael Boggs and Marc Rzepczynski could not hold on to the lead.

St. Louis scored two runs in the bottom of the second as Gio Gonzalez walked Yadier Molina, Daniel Descalso and Pete Kozma with one out in the inning. He threw a wild pitch with Adam Wainwright at bat, walked Wainwright and then John Jay hit a sacrifice fly to score Descalso.

They did not need a hit to score in that inning. You can say that the nerves maybe got to Gonzalez who was making his first career postseason start.

Gonzalez went five innings, allowed two earned runs on just one hit, but had seven walks and five strikeouts.

The Washington National bullpen deserves a lot of credit for the win as Craig Stammen, Ryan Mattheus, Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen threw four scoreless innings.

Game 2 is tomorrow, Monday at 4:30 p.m. ET.
