Newly signed San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jerome Simpson has been suspended for 6 NFL games for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
The 49ers expected a suspension when they signed the talented wide receiver formerly of the Minnesota Vikings. 49ers general manager, Trent Baalke stated
"The probability of a suspension was known when we signed Jerome, since joining the 49ers, Jerome has proven to be a great teammate."
Simpson was released from the Vikings last season after being arrested on charges of driving on a limited driver's license, possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle and possession of an open bottle in a motor vehicle.
Simpson has had 3 off the field incidents since 2012 and already completed a 3 game suspension in 2013. Simpson is a solid player with great hands but this has to be pretty frustrating for the 49ers who already lack significant playmakers. Simpson was slated to be the number 3 wide receiver for the 49ers however that job will now go to Quinton Patton.
The 49ers are in desperate need for wide receivers that can be productive on the field. Torrey Smith will be their number one receiver to start the year and Anquan Boldin should work alongside Smith.
