After two preseason games the Cowboys are currently reassessing their backup quarterback position.
Brandon Weeden was knocked out with what was thought to be a concussion and Dustin Vaughan has looked pretty terrible. Vaughan's inability to sense pressure or make accurate deep throws has pushed 3rd string quarterback Jameill Showers into the spotlight.
Showers has shined because he is not the typical Cowboys quarterback. Showers is mobile and often runs for first downs and takes deep shots down the field. He is one of the few backup quarterbacks that is actually fun to watch and gives the Cowboys another dimension when he is on the field. Showers also is a heavy hitter in special teams contributing in ways that the other backups cannot. Vaughn would be a perfectly suitable backup as a pocket passer except his accuracy has digressed and he cannot feel the pressure around him.
Weeden has been the go to guy when Romo has been out however he had his shot last season and floundered when his name was called. Now granted Weeden has looked a lot better this preseason but that is not saying much, and it seems to be too late for the Cowboys to get a solid new backup except for the one they already have on their roster.
If the Cowboys have to keep two quarterbacks it wouldn't be totally shocking if Showers was the guy who got the call.
