Europa League Results: Liverpool Made to Wait After Late Equalizer as 13 Teams Qualify; Spurs a Point Away from Next Round

Thirteen teams qualified for the round-of-32, joining the already progressed six, in another flurry of matches on matchday five of the Europa League.

Anzhi Makhachkala, Fenerbahce, Borussia Monchengladbach, Sparta Prague, Lazio, Atletico Madrid, Viktoria Plzen, Levante, Genk, Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, Napoli, Newcastle and Bordeaux were the ones to book themselves a place in the next round. Lyon, Rubin Kazan, Inter Milan, Hannover, Bayer Leverkusen and Metalist Kharkiv had already entered the second phase.

Liverpool threw away their chances of qualifying, by conceding a late goal to Young Boys, while Tottenham Hotspur just need a draw in their final group game, after playing out another goalless draw with Lazio.

At Anfield, Liverpool took the lead through midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, employed as a center-forward, with the likes of Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard starting the game on the bench. Joe Cole, who had a good game for the Reds, was the provider, with Shelvey heading in from three yards out in the 33rd minute.

However, Young Boys refused to let the game go the home side's way, scoring the equalizer seven minutes into the second half - Raul Bobadilla notching a smart finish. Suarez came on soon after, and the in-form Uruguayan seemed to reignite the Liverpool attack, with the striker playing a role in Liverpool's second goal.

Gerrard, who was brought on for the injured Andre Wisdom, with Jordan Henderson moving to right-back, played a pass through to Cole, via Suarez, with Cole calmly slotting it past Young Boys goalkeeper Marco Wolfli in the 72nd minute.

That goal seemed like it would be enough to give Liverpool a win, but Brendan Rodgers' side were denied three points thanks to a wonderful strike from Elzad Zverotic with two minutes remaining.

Now Liverpool will need to post a win against bottom club Udinese if they are to ensure qualification, with Young Boys, who are level on points with the Reds, facing already qualified Anzhi.
