Detroit Lions Rumors: Calvin Johnson's Future Up in the Air? Retirement Option, Release Possible?

The Detroit Lions will face a tough decision this offseason as Calvin Johnson is expected to cost them $11 million in 2016. Johnson however might make a decision on his future before the Lions get a chance.

Johnson has said he is weighing his options of what he would like to do going forward. This is likely do to the draining seasons of Lion's football he has had to endure.

The Lions have a talented roster but none of their recent coaches have been able to put things together. Johnson suffered from a ton of injuries this season and it is likely his body will need some time to recover before he makes a final decision on what he really wants to do with the rest of his career. Johnson should have several productive years left and if he does decide to stay it is unlikely he will remain in a Lions uniform.

Plenty of teams would love to get Johnson's services no matter his age as he is still a very dominant receiver and a terrible matchup for any defensive back. Johnson finished the 2015 season with 88 receptions, 1,214 yards, and 9 touchdowns. Those numbers just reflect how much of a threat Johnson still is on the football field regardless of his age.

Players like Steve Smith and Larry Fitzgerald are some of the oldest players in the NFL and are still capable of having some of the best seasons amongst wide receivers. With Johnson still putting up significant production maybe it is time for him for him to move on from the Lions and look for a more consistent contender.
