2016 Draft Needs Detroit Lions: Calvin Johnson Retirement Talk Impacts Targets For Team? Germain Ifedi, Shon Coleman Jack Conklin Options

The Detroit Lions will go into the offseason with a ton of questions as Calvin Johnson looks to be nearing the end his journey with the team.

The Lions can save $11 million but cutting the aging star however he still is as productive as he ever was. The big thing has been injuries, small nagging injuries that just hinder his production and performance. If Johnson does indeed retire or is released the primary need for this team will be a wide receiver. Until then their top need is easily cornerback.

Drafting at the 16th spot Detroit will likely miss all of the best cornerbacks available in the first round. Targeting the best corners in the second round would make sense if no one else was left on their draft board. Players like Kendall Fuller, Eli Apple, and Tre'Davious White could all help solidify this secondary.

The Lions could also be in the same predicament at offensive tackle, another one of their key needs. Around the time they pick most of the best offensive tackles should be gone however there might be 1 or 2 left that are still a solid first round pick. Players such as Germain Ifedi, Shon Coleman, or Jack Conklin would help rebuild this poor run blocking offensive line.

The Lions could also look at the defensive side of the ball and draft an inside linebacker or defensive end as both positions are key needs. The Lions could draft players who would be left after the top 10 like inside linebacker Reggie Ragland, or defensive ends Jonathan Allen /Jonathan Bullard.

These guys would help not only defend the run but could add some pressure to this pass rush. With not a ton of cap space the Lions could likely look to restructure Calvin Johnson's deal and add some cost effective free agents.
