Australian Open Roundup: Another 'Double Bagel' for Sharapova as Top Seeds Make Smooth Progress

Maria Sharapova completed her second straight "double bagel" victory of the Australian Open, easing past Misaki Doi in the second round, while there were also victories for Agnieszka Radwanska, David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych.

Sharapova has been in brilliant form at the opening Grand Slam of the year, despite some injury concerns going into the tournament, and Japanese Doi had no chance against the power and experience of the Russian in a 6-0, 6-0 loss.

The 25-year-old had earlier beaten Olga Puchkova with the same scoreline, and looks like the prime challenger to favorite Serena Williams for the title.

Fourth-seeded Radwanska of Poland also did not have any problems, securing a smooth progress with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania.

Home hope Samantha Stosur, seeded nine, though crashed out to Chinese Jie Zheng in three hard-fought sets 6-4, 1-6, 7-5. Another Chinese Li Na was comfortable against Olga Govortsova, easing to a 6-2, 7-5 victory, while fifth seed Angelique Kerber of Germany also eased through to the third round with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lucie Hradecka.

"It was very hot today than the last match I played, was not so windy out there," Kerber said. "But she's a tough opponent, and you need to be ready for the whole match, because she's playing the ball very hard and deep in the court.

"So I was just try moving very good and just play my game. I'm happy that I won the match in two sets."

American teenager Madison Keys continued her dream run in the tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 upset of number 30 seed Tamira Paszek of Austria.

"Very happy. You know, thought I played pretty well, happy with how the day went," the 17-year-old said.

"First round here was a little bit nerve wracking. But I think today it was much better just having that one match under my belt. I was playing an Australian, big court, crowd was against me, but I felt like today I just played tennis."

Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic also made it to the third round with contrasting wins over Alize Cornet of France and Yung-Jan Chan of Chinese Taipei respectively. Williams defeated Cornet 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets, while Ivanovic fought past Chan 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.

In the men's draw, there were no major upsets, as Ferrer and Berdych booked themselves a place in the third round.

Ferrer, seeded fourth, and seen as the biggest threat to the big three - Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray -- was made to sweat a little by  American Tim Smyczek, losing the third set, before eventually prevailing 6-0, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

"It was tough," Ferrer said after the match. "(I played) very good in the first half of the second set -- I started very good -- but he was playing better in the third.

"He is a very good player, I've never played against him before and he has a really good backhand, he received well and I like his game."

Berdych will join Ferrer in the third round after a comfortable 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 win over Frenchman Guillaume Rufin.

Sam Querrey easily progressed after his opponent and fellow American Brian Baker retired with Querrey leading 7-6 (2), 1-1 in the second set. There were also wins for Nicolas Almagro, Marcos Baghdatis, Kei Nishikori and Stanislas Wawrinka.
