Grammy 2013 Winners: What's The Difference Between Record of The Year and Song of The Year? Fun and Gotye Bring Home Top Awards In Los Angeles

Feb 11, 2013 10:41 AM EST

The Grammy's are music's biggest night of the year and many acts and performers cleaned up with awards, including the band Fun as well as Mumford & Sons, who won album of the year for "Babel."

Two of the biggest awards of the night are Record of the Year and Song of the Year, which can be confusing since some of the nominees can cross over on both categories. This year Fun won song of the year for "We Are Young," while Australian songwriter Gotye won the record of the year for his smash single with Kimbra, "Somebody That I Used to Know."

The differences are simple, yet significant between the two awards.

Record of the Year is meant for one track from an album and the award is given to the actual the performing artist, the producer or mixer, basically the person who "recorded" the track. The Song of the Year is also meant for an individual track, but the award goes to the actual writer of the song lyrics and the melody to the song.
