New York Giants tackle David Diehl was arrested last summer for driving while impaired and on Monday he pleaded guilty to aggravated DWI in a Queens District court.
According to ESPN.com, Diehl was arrested after drinking and crashing his BMW into two cars in Queens and he now must wear a SCRAM (Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor) bracelet for 90 days and will not be able to drive or apply for a driver's license in New Jersey for a six-month period.
The report says that Diehl's blood alcohol content was at .182, mush higher than the legal limit of .08. As part of the deal, he will not have to go through two drunken driving programs and pay $1,200 in fees to the owners of the cars for the damages.
Diehl can get the DWI charge dismissed if he goes through all his proper sanctions in the next six months and his first of three compliance programs is schedule for April. If he completes all the proper protocols, he will be sentenced to a one-year conditional discharge on the driving while impaired charge.
The NFL could give him further discipline for his charge and in the past some players have been suspended and/fined for their off the field issues. The league could fine him for violation of the league's substance abuse policy and it could factor out as a one-game check, up to at least $50,000.
"I have been here for 10 years, and throughout those 10 years I have always tried to carry myself and be a positive role model for people on and off the field," Diehl said last summer shortly after the arrest. "I apologize to [my teammates], I apologize to my family, the New York Giants, all my fans and to anybody who has supported me throughout these years. I am going to make sure that I learn from this, and it is a mistake that I guarantee will never, ever happen again.
"I will help other people to make sure that they don't make the same decision that I made in this circumstance. I will become a stronger person because of this."
Diehl has been one of the most important offensive linemen for the Giants over the past few years, including their two championship Super Bowl runs. He was injured for part of last season and the offensive line suffered, ranking in the bottom half of the league in rushing.
