The Philadelphia Eagles signed quarterback Dennis Dixon on Thursday, bringing the former Oregon star back to his coach Chip Kelly.
According to ESPN.com, the contract is for two-years and will reunite Dixon with his former offensive coordinator when he was with the Ducks. Last year Dixon was on the practice squad for the Baltimore Ravens, who went on to win the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers earlier his month.
The 28-year-old Dixon was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round and he appeared in four games while with the team, completing 59.3 percent of his passes for 402 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions. He also rushed for 24 yards and a touchdown in those games.
When Dixon last played with Kelly he was the clear Heisman front-runner before tearing his ACL in the 10th game of the season. He threw for 2,136 yards with 20 touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 67.7 percent of his passes. Dixon added nearly 600 yards on the ground as well.
Dixon joins a crowded quarterback depth chart, with Michael Vick, Nick Foles and Trent Edwards already on the roster. The Eagles will likely have to get rid of one of those players before the season starts either in a trade or by cutting them
Since Dixon was with Kelly at Oregon it is unlikely that he will be traded or cut, leaving Foles or Edwards as the odd man out. The Eagles had a rough season and dealt with mediocre play at quarterback but Kelly is bringing in a new system to use.
