Pittsburgh Steelers Rumors: Steve Breaston Main Focus this Offseason?

Feb 24, 2013 02:15 PM EST

The Pittsburgh Steelers are focusing on acquiring help for wide receiver and Steve Breaston appears to be their man. It's important for the Steelers to fill in their wide receiver needs just in case they can't re-sign Mike Wallace.

Breaston would supply the Steelers with a tough receiver, though never considered a No. 1 since he played in the shadows of the great Larry Fitzgerald in Arizona for four years and then went to Kansas City and was under Dwayne Bowe's shadow as he played with the Chiefs in the past two seasons.

Breaston had one impressive season in 2008 when the Cardinals made their Super Bowl run. He caught his only 1,000 receiving yards in 2008 catching 77 passes, three of which were touchdowns.

He's not a big scorer as Breaston's season high in touchdowns is three which he did in 2008 and 2009.

In recent years, Breaston hasn't been able to perform at a high level, which should raise an eyebrow. He played 10 games, four of which he started. He only caught seven passes for 74 yards and no touchdowns.

He's a 700-yards-a-season kind of guy. He's posted at least 700 yards in four of his six NFL seasons. Breaston can provide the Steelers with depth in the receiving position and could also be a punt or kick returner if necessary. He's handled these duties at times throughout his career.

The Steelers are once again facing tough times with their No. 1 man, Wallace. He wants to get paid seeking over $10 million every season, money the Steelers can't offer to the talented receiver.

Many believe Wallace's talents, though considered one of the speediest guys in the league, could be sharpened. His hands aren't trustworthy and, apparently, Wallace running his mouth every offseason just isn't worth it.

The Steelers could use Breaston's reinforcement in the receiver position. It seems like the team might focus on signing Antonio Brown and give him a pay raise as he could become their new No.1 in 2013.
