Ronda Rousey Makes Smaller Payday Than Dan Henderson After First Female Fight At UFC 157, Are Salaries Fair In Ultimate Fighting Championship?

Feb 28, 2013 10:18 AM EST

Ronda Rousey made headlines after winning the first-ever fight in the UFC between female fighters, retaining her championship belt after defeating Liz Carmouche with her signature armbar move.

Rousey made a nice payday as the co-main event at UFC 157, but not quite as much as the male fighters, including Dan Henderson and Urijah Faber, who each made six figures while Rousey made $90,000 for her fight. The event was held at the Honda Center in Anaheim last Saturday and the fighter salaries for all athletes involved in the event were released were released to MMAWeekly.com on Wednesday by the California State Athletic Commission.

Lyoto Machida and Dan Henderson made the most money of the fighters, although money that the fighters make from pay-per-view sales was not included in the pay totals. Fighters are also usually given "locker room bonuses" by the UFC that are not disclosed to athletic commissions. Early reports said that up to 500,000 pay-per-views were purchased, which could help the fighters at the top of the event.

Carmouche spoke about driving a beat up car in the run up to the fight, but president Dana White said those days are over for his female fighter.

"She going to have a kitchen table, and a couch, and whatever else the [expletive] she wants," White said.

The figures given are required to be submitted by promoters to the state athletic commissions. Rousey made $90,000, with a $45,000 win bonus, while Carmouche made $12,000 for the fight.

In comparison to the female fighters, the males made more money, with Lyoto Machida making $200,000 over Dan Henderson, who made $250,000. Urijah Faber made $100,000 with a $50,000 win bonus, while Josh Koscheck made $78,000.
