NFL Owners Meetings Rumors and Chatter: Branden Albert Chiefs Trade Talks, Darrelle Revis Deal and $42M Settlement With Retired Players Hot Topics

Mar 19, 2013 01:07 PM EDT

The NFL owners are meeting in Arizona for their annual get together and this year there are a number of things to talk about, including the possibility of abandoning the tuck rule, adding a new rule for running backs leading with their heads, as well as a $42M settlement that was made after a five-year court battle with retired players.

According to ESPN.com, the settlement now will put in place a fund that will be run by a panel of retired players to help with those who are dealing with medical and other family issues. The NFL wanted to get the issue done for a long time and now both sides can move forward with it.

Some other news from the meetings includes the possibility of the Chiefs making another big splash with a trade. Peter King at Si.com reported on the possibility of a trade going down now that team franchised him and one option could be the Miami Dolphins, as Albert lives there in the offseason.

The Chiefs already made a big splash by trading for Alex Smith, but now that they had to give up their second pick, they could be looking for a way to snag one. Enter Miami. The Dolphins have money to spend and two second round picks, meaning the Chiefs could be willing to part with their franchise tackle, since they feel they can get one with the first overall pick with either Eric Fisher or Luke Joeckel.

The team would love to get a pick back and the Dolphins have shown they are ready to spend, throwing out money to Mike Wallace, Dannell Ellerbe and Phillip Wheeler already. The Jets have been discussing a deal with the Buccaneers for Darrelle Revis, with a first round pick being the sticking point. Right now any deal that would go down involves Tampa Bay.

The tuck rule is an interesting thing the owners will look at, as they have said that the rule does not serve its purpose anymore following the infamous Tom Brady Patriots game against the Raiders. The competition committee will still allow quarterbacks to bring the ball in if they stop to throw, but now it will be a fumble if they lose it. This one is considered already a done deal.

The new running back rule could be more controversial, as it reads: "It is a foul if a runner or tackler initiates forcible contact by delivering a blow with the top crown of his helmet against an opponent when both players are clearly outside of the tackle box. Incidental contact by the helmet of a runner or tackler against an opponent shall not be a foul.''

Emmitt Smith and Matt forte have already come out to deride it, as has Hall of Fame back Jim Brown. Some other quick hits include:

-The desire by Eagles owner Jeffery Lurie to get the Super Bowl since the Giants got one. ESPN reports that he is pushing for one and hopes that if the one in New Jersey goes well, he can get one too.

"I will, yes. I will, if it's a success," Lurie said. "New York will help us."

-The Cowboys are continuing to talk with Tony Romo about an extension on his contract.

"There's never really a start or stop time with Tony," Jerry Jones said in the lobby of the Arizona Biltmore. "I do think it will get done."
