The New York Jets have said everything and nothing about Tim Tebow all at once, with head coach Rex Ryan and the front office saying he is a part of the roster and the quarterback group, but all signs point to a trade or release for the quarterback.
According to ESPNNewYork.com, Dan Graziano writes that despite what the Jets are saying publically, they are planning to release Tebow if they can't find a trade partner for him. The report says they are hoping to trade Tebow, but that if they can't, they will release him, most likely after the NFL Draft in April.
Ryan spoke to reporters about the quarterback situation, saying that while Sanchez will begin as the starter that does not mean it is set in stone. The team brought in David Garrard to compete and also has Greg McElroy and of course Tebow.
The first snap, he'll be the guy running out there first," Ryan said Tuesday morning at the NFL owners meetings. "But there's going to be competition at that spot, there's no question about it. We need to get better at the quarterback position."
Tebow has been the biggest headache for the team, as they barely used him last season yet he garnered most of the headlines. He was on the field for about 70 plays and rushed for 102 yards and passed for 39 with zero touchdowns.
"He's on the roster, and he'll get a chance to compete," Ryan said of Tebow. "We'll see how the offseason plays out, but right now Tim is on our roster."
Ryan also spoke about Kevin Kolb and whether the team would bring him in, as there were reports the Jets were interested. Kolb was cut by the Cardinals last week after a disappointing season. Kolb has gone 9-12 as a starter and was cute after not playing up to his six-year, $63.5 million contract he signed after being traded.
Last season Kolb had 1,169 yards and eight touchdowns while splitting time with Ryan Lindley and John Skelton, who led the team to one of the worst offenses in the NFL. The Raiders and Bills could be options for Tebow, as they both are working on their quarterback situations.
"If we feel that would help the competition, then that's something we would look into," Ryan said.
