Florida Gulf Coast is the biggest story in the NCAA Tournament this year, as the Cinderella story is full on after defeating Georgetown and now San Diego State to become the first 15-seed to make it to the Sweet 16 in the history of the event.
The team was hitting shots from all over the floor and the game wasn't in question at the end, as Florida Gulf Coast University took down San Diego State, who had made it to the Sweet 16 in two out of the past three years under former Michigan coach Steve Fisher. The 81-71 victory was the first ever win for a 15th seed in the round, as FGCU will advance further than any seed that low.
"We don't take ourselves too seriously," said Florida Gulf Coast coach Andy Enfield. "We try to have fun, get serious when we have to.
Enfield has kept his team loose and excited and he has made headlines himself for his super model wife Amanda Marcum, who has appeared on the cover of Maxim as well as in other magazines and advertisements. Enfield spoke about the relationship earlier in the week, as they met through a mutual friend and had a first date at an NIT game with St John's, when he took her to a fast food restaurant on campus.
"I got her a nice burrito, and we sat behind the bench," Enfield said to Newsday. "I figured if she still likes me after Taco Bell and a basketball game."
Florida Gulf Coast will keep it in-state as they head to Dallas for the south regional against the third seeded Florida Gators. The team is running hot after upsetting the number two seeded Hoyas and now the team is the biggest Cinderella story in Sweet 16 history. The team has a 17-0 run at one point, similar to the 21-2 run against Georgetown they had in the first game.
The Eagles were able to hold off the game despite 20 points and 11 rebounds from Jamal Franklin, who led the seventh seeded Aztecs, who are heading home after going 23-11. The Eagles used some excellent shooting to take down San Diego State, making over 55 percent of their shots from the field, including eight 3-pointers.
The team had another one-handed jam after the amazing dunk against Georgetown and now the team has fans from all over the country rooting for them. Brett Comer led the way for the Eagles with 14 assists and the team has outscored opponents in transition points by 27 over the two game stretch. It's also the first time three Florida teams have made it to the Sweet 16, as Miami defeated Illinois on Sunday.
