Buster Posey has a new contract with the San Francisco Giants after receiving a nine-year extension worth $167 million. The 2-time World Series winner, 2010 Rookie of the Year and 2012 MVP will now have a home as the Giants didn't blink to make sure they have their catcher of the future inked in for almost the next decade.
Posey, who is only 26 years old, is arguable the best hitting catcher in Major League Baseball today. He's only played one complete season in his career and is entering his fourth season as the Giants catcher. These are the numbers he's posted in his short career in the majors.
In 2010, he broke into his first MLB game of that season and went 3-4 with three RBI. He finished that campaign hitting .305 with 18 home runs and 67 RBI while posting a .357 OBP. Posey also went on to lead the Giants to the World Series. He was their slugger and their pitch caller as he had the duties of catching Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain.
In 2011, he suffered a debilitating injury that forced him to miss the rest of the 2011 season. He played that season until May 25 and was hitting .284 with a .368 OBP smacking four home runs and driving in 21 runs. He popped back in 2012 and picked up right where he left off as a rookie. Posey hit .336 top lead the National League with 24 home runs and 103 RBI. He continued to be the best catcher in baseball and even called the game for Matt Cain's perfect game at the beginning of the season.
Now, the Giants put the money on the table and ensure that they will have a catcher they can depend on moving forward.
Posey had signed a one-year, $8 million deal, which helped him avoid arbitration. The Giants couldn't wait for their catcher to become a free agent in 2016, so they inked him to a contract immediately.
The last player to sign a contract of this multitude, but falling more than twice his salary short was outfielder Carlos Gonzalez of the Colorado Rockies who signed a seven-year $80 million deal back in 2011.
