Tim Tebow is not likely to be on the New York Jets roster next season, but he will be attending voluntary team workouts next week despite all signs from the team pointing to a trade or a release sometime after the NFL draft in April.
According to ESPN.com, Tebow is planning to attend the workouts and sources said that the Jets will be looking to trade or release him during or after the NFL draft. The team originally traded a fourth round pick and $2.5 million for Tebow and so far they have not been able to get much out of him. The team planned to use him as a decoy and a change of pace quarterback for Mark Sanchez, but instead everything was a disaster and he barely got on the field.
The workouts for the Jets start on Monday and another player mentioned in trade talks will also be in attendance, as Darrelle Revis will be in town after the team decided to enforce a clause that pays him $3 million of he does. The Revis situation shows another reason why the Jets are inept when it comes to running an NFL franchise, as they literally have taken all sides of the situation as the offseason has gone on, including saying that they are trading Revis, not trading Revis, signing Revis and not signing Revis and about how great of a player he is.
The Tebow situation is more of the same, as basically everything they said last season and this past offseason was not true and now the team wants to get rid of him. Tebow was a good soldier for most of the year, but after the Jets started Greg McElroy over him when they benched Mark Sanchez, he was fed up.
This offseason Tebow has been working on his mechanics and his footwork as well as his throwing motion in Arizona and he also worked out with Heisman Trophy winners Chris Weinke and Vinny Testaverde at various times in Florida. Tebow passed for just 39 yards and rushed for 102 last season, but the Jets did not give him a fair shot.
This year a number of quarterbacks with lesser resumes got new jobs, including Carson Palmer (worse recent resume), as well as Kevin Kolb, Matt Flynn and Ryan Fitzpatrick, three players who have never led their teams to a division title and a playoff win, something Tebow had done with the Broncos.
The release may be the best thing for him, as he could catch on as a backup in a number of places, including Cleveland, where they just traded away Colt McCoy, as well as with the Patriots or Buccaneers, as he was working out in Tampa with Testaverde. The next stage for Tebow will be an interesting one and depending on what he asks for and what teams want, he could finally find himself in a good situation where a team actually wants him.
